About Take Steps

What is Take Steps?

Take Steps is a sponsored walking challenge during the month of June. You can walk wherever you want and whenever you want, whether that’s long-distance hikes, strolls round the park or laps of your garden. You can choose to fundraise for Asthma UK or for the British Lung Foundation. Whichever charity you choose, you’ll be supporting life-saving work.

When is Take Steps?

Take Steps runs from 1st June to the 30th June, but you can start fundraising straightaway. You can also pay in any last-minute donations up until the 18th July. You can start your walks anytime in June too, it’s whenever works for you! Once you’ve linked your Strava or Fitbit app, it will begin automatically tracking your distance from 1st June.

How do I take part?

Sign up for free and set up your personal fundraising page. Link your Strava or Fitbit to your page to track your distance automatically, or add your steps in manually. Go it alone or form a team with family, friends, or colleagues. Begin collecting your sponsorship - get things off to a flying start with donating to your own page first!

No, taking part in Take Steps is completely free.  It’s all about raising as much as you can for your chosen charity!

Tracking your distance

How do I track my distance?

Your profile page includes your personal distance tracker so you can. This is a great way to keep your supporters updated on your progress!

If you track any other workouts with Fitbit, MapMyFitness or Strava your distances will automatically add to your tracker.

Follow these steps to track your KMs automatically:

  1. Download the Fitbit or Strava app and set up your account
  2. Log in to your Take Steps account.
  3. Under the heading ‘Connect your preferred Fitness app’, click your chosen app.
  4. Follow the prompts to connect your account
  5. When you next walk, select ‘start your workout’ in the app on your phone. Once you end your workout, save your workout and your distance will be published to the tally on your page the following day.

If you have synced your app already but it is not working, please log in and re-connect it.

When using Fitbit, you must ‘start’ an activity and save it. Your daily steps will not automatically add to your page. If you are having issues, try syncing through BOTH your Fitbit and the Fitbit app on your smartphone.

Your tally will be updated each day with the previous day’s distances.

I don’t have a fitness app, where can I record my steps?

You can manually add your kilometres to the tracker in your My Fitness Activity tab of your profile after registering. This is a great option if you’re using a pedometer or a different method of tracking your distances.
Follow these steps to manually add your KMs:
1. Log in to your account and select ‘My Fitness Activity’
2. Under ‘Add activity’, enter the date and distance
3. The number of KMs will now appear on your fundraising page!

Why hasn’t my fitness app activity updated?

Your distance tally will be updated once a day with the previous day’s distances. Please allow 24 hours for your distance and activity to update.

Fundraising

How much do I need to raise?

It’s about raising as much as you can, so however much you raise, you’re making a huge difference in supporting those with lung conditions and fighting air pollution. £100 is a great target to aim for – it could a fund a whole day of research, leading to potentially life-saving breakthroughs.

How do I pay in my fundraising?

All the donations that you collect on your fundraising page here will come through to your chosen charity automatically.  We’d recommend collecting all your fundraising on your page and directing your supporters to donate straight to your page.  Then you can see your grand total climb and it’ll be included in the overall Take Steps total!

How do I pay in money that has been donated to me in cash?

We can only accept donations made directly through your Take Steps fundraising page. If you have been given a cash donation, we ask that you please make a card payment to your fundraising page for the value donated. You can then keep the cash yourself. Please enter card holder's details, rather than the person who gave you the donation.

Please note, do not claim gift aid on a donation if you are making the payment on behalf of someone else. This is even the case if they have told you they are happy for you to claim gift aid.

Can I set up a Facebook fundraiser for Take Steps?

Facebook might prompt you to set up a Facebook fundraiser when you post to share your page, or even ask you to enable fundraising on that post.

Please do not set up a Facebook fundraiser as part of your Take Steps fundraising. This is because we will not be able to track any fundraising made through Facebook fundraisers and will therefore not be able to recognise this in your overall fundraising total.

Where is my money going if I fundraise for the British Lung Foundation?

Your fundraising will allow our researchers to find new treatments and cures. You’ll enable us to campaign for better policies on lung health and air quality. And you’ll help people to get lifesaving advice from our support services. Our work is vital.

Over 11 million people came to us for help in 2020, through our web advice, helplines and support services. That’s 5.5 million more than the year before. This year, people with lung disease or suffering with long-Covid symptoms continue to need us more than ever, and we are a lifeline for them. We’re so proud to offer this service. But we can’t do it without fantastic fundraisers like you.

Where is my money going if I fundraise for Asthma UK?

At Asthma UK, we help hundreds of thousands of people with our expert advice and support. We fund world class asthma research. And we campaign to improve the quality of care received by people with asthma. But we need your support to keep funding this work.

Preparing For Your Walk

What I should I wear or bring on my walks?

We all know how unpredictable summer weather can be, so make sure you’re ready for different conditions especially if you’re going on a long walk.  Make sure you’re wearing comfy and suitable footwear.  Bring sunscreen, a waterproof and plenty of water and snacks too.

How should I plan my route?

You can plan your walking routes using the Go Jauntly app to find new walking routes right from your doorstep. Their Green Routes specifically avoid busy roads, taking you through the best nature has to offer, UK-wide.
Simply choose a distance or time limit for your walk and Go Jauntly will do the rest! This helps you to easily plan walks that are manageable and comfortable if you have a lung condition.

Why hasn't my fitness app activity updated on my fundraising page?

Your fitness app will sync your activities every day. Please wait until the next day for your distance to update.

If your fitness activities don't seem to be syncing, please login to your Take Steps account and re-connect your app in the 'My Fitness Activity' section of your profile.

Covid-19 Guidance

What’s the guidance for walking outside with Covid-19 restrictions?

Take Steps is designed so you can do the whole challenge virtually.  You can form a virtual team so you can all contribute to your distance goal and fundraise together as well. And remember, from flights of stairs to laps of the garden – it all counts! You don’t have to take on a 10km hike to Take Steps. 

Always check the latest Government guidance before organising your walks.  The guidance is different from place to place and can change regularly.  When taking part in Take Steps, please follow all Government guidance and social distancing rules.  For the most up to date advice, please look at the Government website for your area:

Can I organise a group in-person walk?

Take Steps is designed so teams can take part without having to meet in-person. But we know people may want to walk together.  If you would like to meet up for a walk together, please check the latest Government guidelines to check it is safe to do so.

Can I take part in Take Steps if I have a lung condition?

Yes of course!  We’d love for you to join Take Steps. Being active can help you manage your condition.  If you’re not comfortable going outside you can complete your Take Steps walks inside your house or around your garden if you would prefer.
